The LTC as UW-Whitewater received a UWS curricular redesign grant 2004-2005 to create a facility for exploring and developing Flash animations and simulations, with common action scripts and interactions that can be applied and shared among UW campuses.
We believe that Flash is a good choice of software for developing on-line learning objects because of its powerful interactive capability and its compatibility with the current web technology. However, we also find that the learning curve for Action Scripting and object oriented programming skills is steep. A viable solution is to develop some commonly used interaction prototypes that can be shared by all.
The Flash Clearinghouse is made up of LTC staff at Whitewater and one ½ time Flash programmer. The Flash Clearinghouse will develop skills and accept projects from faculty at UW campuses interested in incorporating animations or interactive simulation modules in their courses to enhance learning. The main goal of the Clearinghouse is to facilitate the production of the Flash learning objects. Instructional design consultation will be provided as it pertains to the Flash module, but in depth instructional design on the course will not be within the scope of the project.
The Clearinghouse will also collect shareable Flash learning objects and assemble an easy to access resource for all interested.
As a faculty member interested in Flash animation or simulation, your first step is to consult with the LTC staff on your campus, who will provide guidance on the instructional design aspect of your idea and how best should your animation be used and incorporated into your course.
Either the faculty or the campus local LTC staff can initiate contact with the Flash Clearinghouse with the proposal. We will arrange a consultation with the faculty and/or the campus LTC staff to assess the feasibility and the scope of the project. This will normally be a conference call.
Each accepted project will be prioritized by the ‘clearinghouse’ according to the time of request, the creative use of the action capability of the product, and the time needed for production. The content expert (faculty), with the assistance of the campus LTC will provide all content – text, graphics images, charts, formulae, …etc needed to create the Flash object. Once the project get started, the Clearinghouse will set up regular meetings with the content expert and/or LTC staff to review the progress and initiate testing. The Clearinghouse reserves the right to limit the scope of each project to ensure resources are used equitably among projects.
The finished product will be delivered to individual requestors for use in their courses and stored in a central showcase (or repository) for all campuses to peruse and use.
